At the start of the year I got my Unlimited card for Cineworld but unfortunately I have not been able to use it till today mainly due to illness. Today I used it to see the Assassins Creed movie and these are my thoughts on it.
No spoilers in this review
The film is based on the Assassins Creed series of video games and concerns a group of people, the Assassins, and their enemies the Knights Templer. The basic premise which is revealed in the opening credits, is that the Templers are looking for the Apple of Eden, which will give them power over all men, and the Assassins are fighting to prevent them from doing so.
Michael Fassbender is very effective as the hero Cal Lynch and his Assassin alter ego, Aguilar. He looks good and is a powerful figure with a real intensity.
The baddie, on the other had, played by Jeremy Irons, is rather limp with Irons seemingly cruising along doing just enough. This is my only real disappointment with the film.
Without revealing too much the film is basically a film of the game, no real embellishments apart from the chair which is very high tech in the film.
The set pieces are breath taking and the lighting and sound/music really make you feel you are watching one huge cut scene. This is by no means a bad thing as we all know how bad such films can be when the director tries to re-write the plot to match the studios requirements, this film has the feel that it was made by enthusiasts of the game much like Deadpool didnt stray too far from the comic versions.
All in all this is a film well worth seeing and I am now looking forward to the next one.
